NEW POST - DD and Weight Loss?

Hello guys.  So I have a question for you.  I have heard some of you use DD in the past for helping you in your weight loss goals, and wondered if any of you would be able to share things that worked for you, or things that were real pitfalls in using DD to help you towards your goals?

Here is what is going on for us.  I got an early birthday/mother's day gift of a pedometer because it was on sale quite cheap.  I'd been wanting one for close to a year, and we decided the splurge was worth it.  It has really helped.  I got one with a heart rate monitor (Garmin Vivosmart HR) so that I could see how I was doing with that as well.  Well my first day was May 15th, so about a month and a half I have been doing it.  Seeing the numbers on my wrist band really help.  I am much more active now.  I would say I was only getting about 5k steps a day before, now it says I average 13k steps a day, and that's in total since the beginning.  I just started taking Sunday as a rest day the past three Sundays, and seem to be getting about 6-8k those days.  It also helps to see how many minutes I've been active, and to see my resting heart rate go down over time.  It's now 67 on average for resting heartrate!  My first couple of days, it was so hard to get below 100, and near impossible to get below 85 and 90.

So right now this is all new to me, and I am very motivated to keep doing this, but I know a day will come when I just want to quit.  I know me.  I'm hoping it's a way off, but I want to prepare anyway.  I want to put some rules into place.  So far I haven't changed much of how I eat, but I've still lost 10 pounds as of yesterday, though I had lost none in the first month, so glad to finally see some results.  I have changed my lunch to a salad at least three days a week, but that's it diet wise.  I am doing changes slowly so that I stick to them.  I usually jump both feet in and give up pretty quickly.  I am hoping that by making a small change every 3-4 weeks, I'll be more likely to stick with it.

So... what rules do you have for yourself to help with your weight loss, or weight maintenance goals?  Do you have to be active so many minutes/days a week?  Do you have to reach a certain number of steps?  Are you allowed cheat days if you're dieting?  And what were your consequences if you cheated or didn't work out, etc?  Would just love to know the things that are working for you, and maybe know about some of your pitfalls as well so that we can learn from them. :) :)

  1. Hi Es May, I'm sorry, I can't really offer much in the way of advice. I think you are wise taking things slowly and making changes slowly. Good luck with your goal!

  2. You are off to a great start..congrats, it is not easy! With Master's help, I have loss 60 pounds....and more importantly it has been a couple years and have not gained it back. I/We (we were in this together) did much of what you are doing now. He did not make eating choices for me, I did need to get in 10.000 steps a day, at least 5 days a week. I had to ask to snack between meals, since that was a danger zone for me...and had to have the snack approved. I weighed in 1 day a week, any loss was celebrated...in a non food manner, and any gain resulted in a reminder spanking. Staying the same was OK if Master felt I had done my best. No regular cheat days, but if there was a family gathering or special occasion I could indulge, but He expected it to end with the occasion. I still weigh in and report to him once a week, even tho I am now maintaining. Good Luck, you can do this...hugs abby

    1. Wow, these are some really good tips! The snacks one would be hard because the Duke can only call every couple of hours, but I can see us discussing before hand what snacks and how often. Other than that, that sounds like a very doable plan that I'm going to show to the Duke. :) Thank you so much for sharing! :)

  3. Hi Es May! :) It sounds like you are doing really well! Good for you!

Abby gave you some great suggestions. I don't have experience with this, but it does sound like you are proceeding together, and talking through it all, in a positive manner. That's a wonderful start!

It's not the same, but the whole teeth flossing issue, was changed with Rob's "help" in the matter. It's not really a problem now, but I keep up the texting each day, after it is done, and on occasion forget to send the text... like yesterday. No makeup that day (or the next), and a short meeting with the cheeseboard results. His attention, and clever consequences have made all the difference. The daily interactions around that are a nice submission ritual as well. Good luck with your quest! You are doing great! Many hugs,

    1. Thank you, I am trying. Hmmm, flossing, that might be one I have to start doing too. I have really sensitive gums, and they hurt so much when flossed, and can only brush once a day because of them. Apparently flossing for several weeks should strengthen them, but it hurts so much, I avoid it like the plague. I might have to just give in and bite the bullet... though maybe I wouldn't tell the Duke what Rob does to you if you don't floss so that he gets no ideas. :P lol But it would be good to have his help like this in keeping to my exercising and weight loss goals. :)

  4. Hi Esmay, for me, having my husband as an accountability partner and cheerleader is priceless. Over the last 3 years I lost 70 lbs and he helps me do what I already want to do with my running and yoga. I also have to ask to have any sugar or alcohol, but that's really for the best. congrats on your awesome start, slow is definitely better! They say one change per month is the magic number, but do what works for you!

    1. That is wonderful, River Wild! I would love to say I lost 70lbs. :) And that is so wonderful that he's there supporting you. Hmmm, having to ask for sugar... eek... that could be hard! :P But I do see myself getting to that point... maybe after Christmas? :P

Please feel free to leave any comments, but I do ask you to be kind. We go into this with eyes wide open after months of prayer, and a peace in our hearts that this is the right choice before God for our marriage. I am open to questions from those who wonder why we made this choice, but I would ask for no personal attacks. Thank you. :)
